If you’ve scrolled through social media, you’ve likely seen all your self-quarantined friends baking up a storm and sharing mouthwatering pictures of their treats.

With everyone cooped up inside, there’s been a natural uptick in “self-quarantine baking.”

The stress of the “new normal” brought upon by the coronavirus has also led some to turn to what is called “stress baking.”

A study published by Insider in 2015 (way before coronavirus was even a thing)  found that baking has a calming effect as it allows people to express themselves creatively and focuses the mind.

“It’s gratifying to produce something tangible (a loaf of bread, a tray of cookies),” Maya Kosoff told CNBC’s "Make It." She added that it was “soothing and meditative” to make something she’s “very familiar and comfortable with.”

Plus, once you bake something, you can experience the joys of eating it. Never underestimate the power of comfort food.

The demand to make things from scratch has led to more people searching for recipes online.

According to ABC, Twitter’s most popular hashtags was #QuarantineBread.

Baking queries also dominated Google, which reported that the top trending search was “how to make banana bread.” The search result makes sense considering there’s only a few ways you can salvage overripe bananas in a way that’s as tasty as a fresh loaf of banana bread. has a recipe that has 5-stars from those who have given it a whirl.
