Save face this summer.
If 2020 was the year of staying inside and wearing face masks, 2021, with the pandemic receding into the distance, feels like the advent of venturing out and rocking sunglasses.
But how do you find the perfect pair of shades for your newfound sunny outlook on life?
Style expert Denise Caldwell recently spoke to Good Morning America about how to find the perfect pair of sunglasses for your face shape, noting that it can be like “Spanx for the face” because the right “silhouette and style will balance your features and flatter your face.”
Ultimately, the best sunglasses shape for you is the one you feel best in, but if you’re not sure where to start, consider the advice below!
Round frames are particularly flattering on square faces
“A round design will make your cheekbones pop and compliment your chin,” said Caldwell. You can go full-on John Lennon or opt for a subtler clubmaster shape with angular styling on the upper rim but a round lens on the bottom.

Square frames are particularly flattering on round faces
Caldwell pointed to the angles in a square frame, sharing that they can “compliment both your hairline and jawline creating symmetry.” Square sunnies are a statement piece, so go oversized with the classic shape or lean into a chunkier frame.

Aviators are particularly flattering on heart-shaped faces
“This style gives you a little edge mixed with classic, just think Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun,’” said Caldwell of the forever-cool (and now presidential!) sunglasses. Because of their metal frame, when you pick a pair think of the type of jewelry you gravitate towards and let that dictate your decision.

Cat-eye frames are particularly flattering on oval faces
You’ll be the cat’s meow with these sunglasses that have managed to stay trendy since the 1930s, gracing the faces of starlets from Marilyn Monroe to Rihanna. Is it too much to pair with winged eyeliner? Absolutely not, the more flair the better!

Wayfarers are particularly flattering on oval faces
The Blues Brothers, James Dean, Bob Dylan, the list goes on for famous faces that have pulled off the effortlessly suave style of wayfarers. Get the classic black frames or spring for a pop of color, you can’t go wrong with this classic.
