Authorities break up illegal wedding party with over 200 guests amid COVID spikes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Authorities said they broke up an indoor wedding party with more than 200 people in Queens, New York early Saturday morning over coronavirus violations as spikes in cases in the borough have been raising alarms.

Sheriff deputies busted the illegal event at the Elite Palace on Garfield Avenue in Maspeth shortly after midnight.

Authorities said they found guests not wearing masks or social distancing. They said there were 284 people inside in violation of social distancing guidelines.

Both the manager and owner of the establishment were taken into custody and issued appearance tickets for multiple misdemeanor offenses, including violating the city's COVID emergency measure.

The owner of a tire shop across the street told 1010 WINS he had seen other parties there during the pandemic.

“They have parties over there,” he said. “A lot of people outside. No masks, no nothing.”

The bust comes as city health officials are threatening to shut down private schools and businesses in nine Queens and Brooklyn neighborhoods over spiking coronavirus cases.
