Should You Fly Yet? Here's What Experts Say

With the coronavirus pandemic being shadowed by George Floyd protests, many are stuck wondering how the various state reopenings and maintained social distancing guidelines should affect travel. Is it safe to fly yet?

While there's no sure answer on whether or not flying right now is right for you, there are a few things you should consider before stepping foot on an airplane amid the pandemic.

It's good to keep in mind that a 6-foot distance between you and others is nearly impossible in airports and on planes, and who knows if the surfaces you touch were recently disinfected?

There is no way to make air travel 100% safe, CNN reports, however, if you are healthy and those you are visiting are healthy, you could minimize your exposure to the virus by choosing a different mode of transportation.

If you do choose to fly, you should be aware of different airlines' policies on seating and boarding. Some airlines are blocking off middle sections while others will offer refunds if you choose you don't feel comfortable with your flight.

It is also wise to try to choose a window seat if possible. With 6 feet of distance between yourself and others in mind, sitting alongside a wall helps maintain some distance on at least one side.

Bring hand wipes and sanitizer with you to the airport. You will likely be touching many surfaces that haven't been disinfected between uses, so you'll need to disinfect your hands yourself, and frequently. It could also help to store things others will be touching (passports, IDs, etc.) in disposable zip bags.

Of course, it is recommended, and often mandatory, that you wear a mask while traveling.
