This year's White House holiday decorations honor frontline workers

The White House had a new decorator for the holidays this year.

On Monday, First Lady Jill Biden unveiled her first White House holiday decorations to a more traditional feel than former First Lady Melania Trump.

The first lady's theme for the 2021 holiday is "Gifts From the Heart," and she shared that she was inspired by front-line workers who have continued to persevere through the pandemic.

Biden said she also used the inspiration from people she met while campaigning for her husband last year, The Associated Press reported.

"The things we hold sacred unite us and transcend distance, time, and even the constraints of a pandemic: faith, family, and friendship; a love of the arts, learning, and nature; gratitude, service, and community; unity and peace," Biden wrote in a commemorative guidebook.

She went on in her book to say, "these are the gifts that tie together the heartstrings of our lives. These are the gifts from the heart."

The decorations include a gingerbread village weighing 350-pounds and includes a mini-White House. In addition, the State Dining Room has photos of former first families, the AP reported.

More than 10,000 ornaments and 6,000 feet of ribbon were put up with the help of over 100 volunteers.
