A startling new video shows a young girl’s chilling encounter with a shark just near the shore of a beach in Hawaii.
Anela Rezentes, a 6-year-old native Kailua (a town on the island of Oahu), made it out of the close call unscathed.
But the impression the Kalama Beach incident left on her was deep.
Watch the video:
“My soul left my body,” Rezentes recalled to Honolulu outlet KHON-TV. “I saw a shark. I didn’t notice he was behind my back. So I really wanted to run out. I was really scared.”
In the clip, Anela is seen swimming in the water and being lifted slightly by a passing wave.
As swell washes away, a shark’s tail and fins can be seen coming up behind the girl, who becomes startled when she realizes what it is.
She then starts splashing frantically in a tense few seconds before beginning to return to shore.
The moment was captured by Anela’s mother, Sheri Gouveia, who didn’t realize while taping that a shark had come so close to her daughter.
“By the time she came out of the water, she was hysterical,” said Gouveia. “I was like oh my gosh. So I ran up, but I was looking for it but couldn’t see it. I didn’t realize it was actually a shark. That’s what shocked me.”
The incident was frightening for the family, but the mother is relieved her daughter is safe.
“Never ever has something like this happened before. She’s pretty much here every other weekend. I guess there really are angels watching over my angel,” Gouveia said.
Experts believe that the shark in the video is a Blacktip shark, which is known to seek food in shallower waters.
