Know that it may be a long road ahead: Arguments began Monday, March 8, about whether third-degree murder charge should be reinstated against Chauvin.
After that issue is settled, jury selection begins and opening arguments are scheduled to begin no earlier than March 29. Experts believe the case could last upwards of four weeks.
Chauvin, 44, is accused of kneeling on the back of a handcuffed Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes while he begged for his life. Viral video of the incident sparked angry protests in places across the country, including Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Atlanta and more.
At trial, Chauvin faces second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, with the possibility of a third-degree murder count depending on Cahill's ruling on the question. Experts say Chauvin's defense is expected to focus on Floyd's health and how that may have contributed to his cause of death, and questions about intent -- and rather he meant for Floyd to die.
