Cody Johnson is reminding us what music is all about after a sentimental moment between him and a young fan on the second night of his Leather tour went viral.

Footage from Johnson’s concert in Anaheim, CA melted hearts across the world last week after a young fan stole the show with her homemade sign that read, “I survived my bone marrow transplant to see CoJo! #biggestfan.”
“I usually don’t do this,” Johnson said as his paused the show to acknowledge the sign. He then took off his hat and embraced the young fan. “Y’all might have to give me a minute,” he said, gripping his heart while preparing to sing his hit, “Til You Can’t.”
While catching up with John & Tammy: San Diego’s Morning Show, Johnson detailed the moment further, sharing it was exactly the reminder he needed that night after he felt consumed by the business side of his music.
“For me, I was coming back on tour and I’ve got all this publicity and all this stuff going on. I control every aspect of my business and I’m very involved and I have all these other things going on,” he explained. “I’m in my own head as a performer, and on the very last song, I look over and this little girl holds up this sign that says, ‘You got me through my bone marrow transplant. I wanted to see Cody Johnson.’”
“That’s what it’s about,” he continued. “I’ll take that over a gold record any day… I have a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old little girl and I just put my guitar down and gave her a hug and whenever I got close to her ear, I said, ‘Let me tell you something, don’t you ever start giving up.’ I said, ‘Don’t you ever give up, don’t ever give up, don’t you ever stop dreaming. You dream as big as you want to.’ It just took a hold of me, it was one of those things that you can’t fake.”
The powerful moment is a direct reflection of the impact Johnson’s music has on his fans and the passion he puts into each and every one of his songs.
“The only songs I’ll cut are what I believe in, I refuse to cut music that doesn’t touch my soul,” he shared. “Happy, sad, glad, mad, indifferent — they’re all feelings [and] music should touch human emotion.”
Johnson is currently in the second week of his Leather tour, which runs through July 11. Check out the full list of dates here and get tickets here.
