NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Reigning champ Joey “Jaws” Chestnut claimed his 14th title—and broke another world record—Sunday as competitors returned before a live audience at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island.
Chestnut ate a record-breaking 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to win his 14th Mustard Belt at the annual Fourth of July event.
Chestnut beat the world record he set last year, when he consumed 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. At the annual weigh-in on Friday, Chestnut told the crowd he was hoping to down around 77 hot dogs this year. Eighteen men competed in the event.
“It just felt good,” Chestnut said after his win. “Even if I was uncomfortable, having everybody cheer me and push me, it made me feel good.”
The contest was held at Maimonides Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, just steps from the usual spot at Surf and Stillwell avenues, where Nathan’s Famous has its flagship restaurant on the Coney Island boardwalk.
The competition had no spectators last year because of the pandemic. There were no pandemic restrictions this year, and organizers said they expected a capacity crowd.
Arizona teacher Michelle Lesco, whose personal record is 34 hot dogs, won the women's contest this year, eating 30 3/4 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Ten women competed.

Reigning champ Miki Sudo, who holds the current women's record of consuming 48.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes, did not compete this year because she is pregnant. She said she would be back next year.
