SYOSSET, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Several lifeguards and first responders were honored on Tuesday for rescuing a 4-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a public pool on Long Island earlier this month.

According to officials, a 4-year-old boy named Vincent was playing with friends at Syosset-Woodbury Park Pool on Aug. 13 when lifeguards noticed he had not resurfaced after diving under water.

Lifeguards at the pool immediately sprang into action and within moments, Vincent was pulled from the water. At the time he was not breathing and had no pulse.

For 30 minutes, lifeguards continued to perform chest compressions until the 4-year-old spit out water and started breathing.

“He remained under the observation of the lifeguarding team until first responders arrived and transported him to a local hospital,” a press release read.

On Tuesday, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recognized the lifeguard team – including Gianna Magrino, Ryan Harrison, Timothy Nealon, John Shea and Cameron Martinez – and first responders involved in the rescue and thanked them for their heroic actions.

“I take great pride in recognizing the outstanding and lifesaving actions of our Town of Oyster Bay personnel, especially during the summer months when our lifeguards and other first responders are often called into action,” said Saladino. “Their combined efforts and quick actions saved this little boy’s life. They are true heroes.”

Vincent has recovered from the ordeal and was photographed with the lifeguards who saved his life on Tuesday.
