The Mets are fighting for their lives with less than two months to go in the season, trying to halt a freefall that has seen them drop from first to third place in the NL East, while their playoff odds are down to just five percent, per Baseball Reference.
But the front office is reportedly looking ahead to the future as well, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that team owner Steve Cohen is hoping to reel in a big fish to run the team’s baseball operations.
Per Rosenthal, acting general manager Zack Scott is still expected to have the interim tag removed from his title, but Cohen wants a big name above him as the president of baseball operations. Theo Epstein, who helped lead the Red Sox and Cubs out of painful World Series droughts, was thrown around as a potential name that Cohen could pursue, though Epstein recently left baseball operations to work in the commissioner’s office with a focus on improving the game.
Scott replaced general manager Jared Porter after he was fired for sending sexually explicit texts to a female reporter during his time with the Cubs in 2016, and Sandy Alderson reportedly supports the idea of making Scott the official general manager. But it sounds like Cohen wants to add another big name to his front office, perhaps this coming offseason after making big moves in his first winter as team owner, like trading for Francisco Lindor and signing him to a record extension.
