Loret Newlin, director of Illinois Separation, joins Marc Cox and Kim St. Onge to outline the movement seeking to separate downstate Illinois from Chicago and Cook County. Newlin explains the non-binding advisory referendum process appearing before voters in 11 additional counties and select townships in Adams County, adding to 33 jurisdictions that have already approved separation resolutions. The discussion explores historical precedents including Maine's separation from Massachusetts, public pushback against state fiscal policy and the SAFE-T Act, the constitutional hurdles of Article IV requiring state legislative and congressional consent, and advocacy for establishing an independent state rather than annexing into neighboring states like Indiana.
