People detained at New York's Rikers Island are making desperate pleas for help with what they have described as long-standing inhumane conditions, like black mold, violence and unsafe COVID protocols. So they’ve taken matters into their own hands by leaving voicemails for attorneys in New York documenting their experiences and by staging a hunger strike, which has been going on since January 7. On this week's episode of Connect the Dots Weekly – hosted by WCBS 880's Lynda Lopez – we hear those pleading voicemails. We’ll also hear from Akeem Browder, the brother of Kalief Browder, who committed suicide after his imprisonment and solitary confinement at Rikers Island for allegedly stealing a backpack; veteran lawyer Christopher Boyle with the New York County Defender Services; and New York Times investigative reporter Jan Ransom.
