New Jersey’s Department of Corrections says six people, including a senior corrections officer, are charged with money laundering and smuggling contraband into South Woods State Prison.
Officials say an investigation revealed 39-year-old Kenneth Stinson of Penns Grove was working with several inmates to bring banned items into the prison in exchange for money. He was suspended in March and charged on June 1.
Authorities did not specify what kind of items were being smuggled inside, but said introducing contraband presents security risks for inmates as well as staff members.
Each defendant faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
