Collins Dictionary says ‘mogging’ is the word of the year

"Mogging" is the word of the year, according to Collins Dictionary. It means "to outshine someone or something."

The dictionary experts say the slang term has entered mainstream language and saw a 210% increase in usage in 2026.

Alex Beecroft, Collins managing director, said, “It’s a great example of how Gen Z and Gen Alpha have adopted a word and turned it into humorous slang, making the language their own and ‘mogging’ the rest of us.”

Other new entries include “ghost jobs”—jobs advertised with no intention of appointing anyone—and “friendslop,” a type of low-budget, independently produced video game played among friends.
