An anti-ICE protest along Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City outside the Clayton G. Graham Public Safety Building ended with five people being arrested. The charges range from simple assault and obstruction of justice to resisting arrest and illegal possession of a chemical device — that being pepper spray.
Police say the protestors refused to clear from a designated area for people to safely enter the building.
The organization behind the protest — El Pueblo Unido Atlantic City — says they were protesting against the kidnapping of its community and accused the police department of collaborating with ICE.
It comes days after a video circulated online by the organization purported to show ICE agents asking an AC police officer for help during a traffic stop. They alleged the officer then prevented a member of the organization from documenting the traffic stop and subsequent trip to Delaney Hall.
Atlantic City Police Chief James Sarkos called the video misleading and said the officer was just enforcing traffic laws.
He also says the police department follows the state's directive to limit collaboration with ICE.
