Federal officials say a man from El Salvador has died at an ICE detention facility in North Jersey.
Delaney Hall in Newark has been the target of months of protests over living conditions for people detained there.
ICE says that 41-year-old Edwin Lopez-Cornejo had been held there since his arrest in June. The agency says he died Saturday.
The government accused Lopez-Cornejo of entering the U.S. illegally.
His official cause of death has not been released.
Democratic Sen. Cory Booker says, "Delaney Hall must be closed immediately and permanently."
He and other lawmakers and immigration advocates say the death showcases the inhumane conditions at the facility.
The Trump administration has defended the center’s operations.
