Pope Leo has canceled his planned trip to Assisi, Italy, next week. He was set to travel there by helicopter, but his doctors have advised against that while he recovers from lung surgery.
They said a follow-up chest X-ray confirmed the pope was recovering well after having the lower lobe of his right lung removed. But because it’s been less than a week since he was released from the hospital, they said he shouldn’t take the trip.
Instead, the pope will send a message to the event marking the 40th anniversary of Saint John Paul II’s World Day of Prayer for Peace.
