Just when I think I can't be surprised by anything anymore, people go and do this.

There's a new trend on TikTok where people are lighting snowballs on fire to "prove" that snow is a hoax! And some people are even claiming that snow is a government conspiracy and that the government can now control the weather. *insert eye roll* THEY CAN'T.

In the numerous videos on TikTok people can be seen holding lighters to snowballs, which then appear to burn but not melt.

While this does appear to make it seem like the snow isn't frozen just water, it's actually caused by a very simple natural phenomenon - sublimation. When you hold a heat source that close to the snowball, it's causing it to go from a solid to gas, rather than a liquid - which is why you don't see the snowball melting in a puddle of water.
