On the heels of dropping her brand new track with Sam Smith, Charli XCX caught up with Audacy’s Julia to discuss new music and a whole lot more.
LISTEN NOW: The Julia Show talks with Charli XCX
Sharing how the song “In The City,” came about, Charli revealed she and Sam, who just so happen to be “kind of” from the same town in London, have wanted to team up for quite some time.
"We were kinda sending ideas back and forth to each other until we found what we thought was kinda the right thing for us.” Delving into the subject they settled on, Charli said “it’s kinda just about like meeting people on a night out who you just really connect with and are inspired by and kind of remain friends with or connected to for the rest of your life.”
After breezing over some iconic Pop tracks and artists she prefers to party to, as well as that scary, but for the most part stunt driver safe scene in her “Speed Drive” music video, Charli explained to a curious Julia what she meant by “I’m everywhere, I’m so Julia,” that she had on a notes app screenshot she shared after her wisdom teeth removal.
“That’s actually a reference to a lyric in a song that has not come out yet… It’s actually a reference to Julia Fox, who I think is just THE reference, y’know. Especially at one point she was like everywhere… So the song, I can’t talk too much about it because it’s not out yet, but it will be out eventually, but that’s what that is in reference to.”
Also not being about to talk about composing music alongside Jack Antonoff for the A24 film Mother Mary, since it’s “still very much in process,” Charli did offer that “it’s been a really interesting experience, the movie is about a Pop star, but I don’t think I can say much more, but yeah it’s been cool… It’s been a different dynamic, because I write for other artists but this is kind of a different thing in that its a fictional artist… but I’ve been having a really great time doing it and I think it’s going to be really quite epic.”
Composing music for Mother Mary isn’t the first time Charli has taken on this particular task, having previously worked on composing the soundtrack for the movie Bottoms. “It’s cool to work alongside a director who kind of sees music so viscerally and really has this vision for how music is used to kind of amplify their film vision.”
“You kind of work in a different way I suppose and I’ve been really enjoying that. So yeah I think I’ll probably do a little more of that, and honestly I’m lazy and I don’t want to be on stage forever,” she quipped, “so you know a little back up plan.”
Charli also shared some “key elements” to a good party, and an “interesting” idea she had for a party game. Both of which you know are clutch since they’re coming from Charli. To find out more, listen to the entire interview above.
