According to Variety, Amaru Entertainment and the Shakur Estate have signed off on the making of a biopic about Afeni Shakur, the mother of Tupac Shakur and a prominent member of the Black Panther Party.
The film is titled Peace, Love & Respect; the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story and will focus on a two-year period of Shakur’s life. The events begin on April 2, 1969 when she and 20 other Black Panthers were arrested and charged with conspiracy to bomb police stations in New York, through June 16, 1971 when Tupac was born. The film will also feature flashbacks to her childhood and teenage years.
Jasmine Guy and Jamal Joseph, who was arrested with Shakur as one of the “Panther 21,” will be executive producers. Dina LaPolt was named producer of the film and has worked with the Shakur estate for many years.
Guy wrote a 2005 biography on Shakur and told Variety, “I was honored when Afeni asked me to author her biography. Now, I have the opportunity to honor her life and her legacy on the screen, and I am very excited to share her remarkable story this way.”
LaPolt added that Guy’s involvement was critical to making the biopic a reality. “Afeni always wanted Jasmine to write her book, the Shakur estate could not imagine doing Afeni’s biopic without Jasmine Guy involved,” LaPolt said.
