A group of teenagers on their way to the Bahamas for a graduation trip were in for a surprise when their flight was canceled due to their refusal to wear masks.
American Airlines flight 893, departing from North Carolina, was delayed to the point of cancellation when 30 teenagers from Boston started being "very obnoxious," according to passengers reports the Daily Mail.
Other passengers on the flight say the group collectively refused to wear face masks despite federal mask mandates.
Passenger Stephanie Krzywanski elaborated on the event in a phone call with News19 from the plane. "There were a group of high school seniors celebrating their graduation who were being rowdy and not wearing their masks," she said.
"What transpired was a lot of back and forth between, I assume, the parents," she continued.
A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that the group was "non-compliant" with the mask mandate.
Passenger Malik Banks, who was sitting next to the group, told WSOC-TV, "It was bad. Firstly they were yelling, they were cussing. They were being very obnoxious" before elaborating that it was about 75-80% of the group who were being disruptive.
Meanwhile, passenger Christina Randolph said, "All they had to do was follow the rules, put the mask on, sit there, no smart mouth comments. They couldn't do it."
The flight was rescheduled for Tuesday morning after an "extended delay." All passengers on the flight, including the group of teenagers, were rebooked for the next flight. The group agreed to wear their masks.
While most passengers were given hotel and meal vouchers while they awaited the next flight, the group from Boston was forced to sleep in the airport due to age requirements.
