We’re back with a handful of pop bops that you absolutely need to listen to, but this time, in true Bikini Kill fashion, we’re asking the girls to come to the front. We present you with seven pop songs from rising female artists who are killing it right now. We’d be remiss not to encourage you to dive in and take a listen.
From K-pop up-and-comers such as GRFRIEND, to TikTok star turned pop sensation like Ashnikko, to the fervent Latin Pop sounds that Paloma Mami is bringing to the table, this list of songs takes you from classic, sugary pop all the way to the moody sounds of bedroom beats. So stop what you’re doing for a moment, and give yourself the time to discover these new tracks.
For Ya - Paloma Mami
Paloma Mami, the twenty-year-old, Chilean-American, pop singer, based out of New York City is low-key burning things up with her newest single “For Ya.” The track is sung in both Spanish and English, possess a demure and laid back quality that allows Paloma to feel like the pinnacle of total coolness.
MAGO - GFRIEND
We’ll take all the 70s-inspired, K-pop in the world please. GFRIEND, the six-member, K-pop, girl group is doing something magical with “MAGO”, the lead single off their newest studio album, Walpurgis Night. With K-pop and disco beats being hot commodities in the music scene right now, GFRIEND has struck gold with the highly danceable track.
Control - Zoe Wees
This eighteen-year-old, German-based singer is not here to play. Zoe Wees, who’s commanding voice echoes effortlessly throughout “Control” is delivering something deeply moving with her lead single. The song is about the singer’s struggles with rolandic childhood epilepsy, and how it has shaped her into the artist we hear today. Though she has healed from the disease she told Wonderland. magazine, “I see 'Control' as the best way to leave my past behind and writing this song was the best therapy I could have done to deal with this past.”
Grave - Leah Kate
We love a good secret tbh, and Leah Kate is taking hers to the “Grave” with her brand new single. The New York-based pop singer is keeping things classically pop and flaunting her bad-ass attitude as she does it.
Girlfriends - Boys World
Talk about pique bubblegum pop with the perfect touch of modernity to make this all-girl group the next TikTok smash. With the release of their debut single “Girlfriends,” Boys World is serving us Lisa Frank meets #FYP realness. Aside from giving us a catchy beat and addictive lyrics, the five members of Boys World deliver out-of-this-world choreography that we are currently trying to teach ourselves.
Daisy - Ashnikko
Ugh, yes! We love it when pop music meets whimsical weirdness. Ashnikko’s “Daisy” saw success on TikTok and quickly made its way on to the Top 40 charts. Like Ashnikko reminds us “I’m crazy, but you like that…” yeah true. Half the fun of this song blossoms out of the “Daisy” music video which brings us into a monochromatic, almost Bjork-inspired, outlandish, digital dream world that truly suits Ashnikko beautifully.
Steeeam - Shelly
The new band, fronted by our favorite bedroom pop baby turned Indie sweetheart, Clairo is here to make you revel in your angst and love every second of it. Shelly, the band featuring Clairo and her best friends, Claud, Josh Mehling, and Noa Frances Getzug is giving us the synth-y, porch music vibes, that every cigarette-smoking, liberal arts school student craves. However, we can’t get enough of the subtly, sunny, effervescence that Shelly is producing with their sound. We can’t tell if we should expect more from Shelly, or if this rare formation was a product of quarantine creativity.
