As Camila Cabello readies to release her brand new album, Familia, on Friday, April 8 the 25-year-old is detailing the emotional process she went through while creating the project. In particular, the pain brought on through her highly public split from Shawn Mendes, that nearly paralyzed her creative process.

“I was just like in a really kind of sh**** place, like mental health-wise,” Camila told E! News Daily Pop. “Obviously, I want to make good songs, but to me, it’s just like, I just want to have a good time today in the studio and feel safe and feel relaxed and feel like I’m being true to myself.”

She continued, “There was a time where my anxiety felt so bad, I was like, ‘I don’t feel like I can go in the studio… it’s just a paralyzing feeling’“ she shared. "My life was so bad and so painful that I was like, ‘If you tell me that eating s*** off the ground will make me feel better, I will do it.’ I was like, ‘Yes, of course, therapy. All of it.”

The only way Camila felt she could go into the studio and finish the album was to be her honest and authentic self, and that’s exactly what she did. The result is an album that is nothing but the truest version of herself.

“Compared to my previous albums, I think I’m just me as a human being is just in a better, more grounded, more well-rounded space,” she said. “My first two albums was, like late teens, early 20s, I had a lot of anxiety making those albums.”

Shawn and Camila split in November 2021 after a nearly three-year relationship telling fans their romantic relationship was over but they still love one another.

The split from Mendes isn’t the only one that fueled the album, Camila also shared that the lyrics from the song,“Psychofreak,” that read, “I don’t blame the girls for how it went down…” is in fact about her split from former girl group, Fifth Harmony.

“That song is basically about anxiety and all of the different things that have made up like my journey with anxiety and starting off really young in the industry,” she said before sharing she is now in a supportive and positive place with her former band mates. “We have been like supportive of each other through like DMs and stuff…I’m like, in a really good place, with them.”
