While he was there they did talk about the latest in NBA news, but of course they had to talk music too with Weezy as a guest.
Jackson asked, “what do you rank Nicki?” out of all-time female rappers, and without hesitation, Wayne responded “I don’t wanna hurt nobody feelings but boy aint nobody f****ng with Nicki – they come after.”
He revealed that when he first landed Drake and Nicki back in 2009, giving the world the big three, he was “excited” and reminisced about being able to give them the platform and instilling confidence in the both of them, “I also didn’t know they would be Drake and Nicki, like I didn’t know that. But I was more excited, I wanted them to see what they could be. They always leaned on that — they always leaned on my confidence I instilled in them.”
The “A Milli” rapper described Nicki as “perfect” when he first discovered her. He explained that he was looking for a sound that hadn’t been done before, “I wanted a New York female,” but “I wanted to make sure she had two things, she was missing, lacking two things: do not sound like Foxy [Brown], do not sound like [Lil’] Kim,” he added.
But when he met Nicki, she was everything he was looking for and then some, “She was changing her voice up, I was like, ‘Okay.’ Like, I ain’t never seen this. This rare,” he said.
Posting the clips on both Twitter and Instagram, Nicki penned a heartfelt message to express her gratitude to her mentor.
The "Only" rapper wrote “When the greatest rapper of all time believed & still believes in you,” and added that she did in fact lean into that confidence he had spoke about.
