The trailer to Mary J. Blige's My Life, executively produced by Quincy Jones, opened with an acoustic version of her hit, "I'm Going Down." Mary expressed, "the only thing that kept us guided was the music; it just saved you." She explained that she grew up in a neighborhood that she needed to escape from. So, she wrote her words and expressed her emotion through song— something she is well-known for.

"My Life is probably my darkest album, one of the darkest times I've had. Most of the times, I was just depressed and didn't want to live," she revealed. "I had it all inside and I was able to sing it and write it. I didn't know that so many people felt the same way." Long time friend, Taraji P. Henson mentioned, "she made it okay for people to say 'it's alright to be me.' [...] she gave us a face. She gave us a name."
