Less than just one month ago, the Canadian pop star previewed the track during her Think Later World Tour stop at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on August 22, and now it’s officially ours.
In the song’s lyrics, Tate tells of a terrible ex who’s moved on with someone else. But don’t get it twisted, this isn't a heartbreak song. In case the title has slipped your mind, Tate assures us all — “It's ok I'm ok,” and she is simply happy to no longer be with said ex, warning his new girl that he’s a walking red flag, but if she wants him, she can have him. “And she be like, 'He's so perfect' / I be like, 'Oh, what version?’/ Ain't nobody got me this nervous / Oh, baby, I been there / And right in that same position / So, baby, don't get this twisted / No, nothin' could make me miss it / Take him, he's yours." Tate sings on the track.
Discussing the meaning behind the song with Rolling Stone, Tate revealed, "Honestly, I wrote it last year in Sweden with Ilya and Savan. It started from a conversation of me being like, 'It's ok I'm ok' - and we were like, 'That would be a crazy pop song.' I ended up finishing it four weeks ago and turned it into a fun pop song and made the music video.”
Also noting the song went through many variations, Tate added, "We rewrote the entire song. A year later, I'm a different person in different relationships. Twenty-one now, I feel like, I have different perspectives so the whole song shifted to me and I saw it in a brand new light I didn't before.”
As for the visual, Tate demonstrates a barrage of bad girl behavior, flexibility, incredible Sean Bankhead choreography, and Popstar energy all over New York City. Getting arrested for being naked in public, doing the splits on top of a truck, hitting every detailed count, and just being that b****.
“It's okay, I'm okay, had him in the first place / It's okay, I'm okay / It's okay, I'm okay, I don't really gotta say / It's okay / You can have him anyway,” Tate sings on the catchy chorus, making it clear she’s doing just fine.
Vibe wise, it’s giving Britney Spears “In The Zone,” Christina Aguilera “Can’t Hold Us Down.” And as Tate shared, it seems we aren’t far off when it comes to the inspiration behind the video. ”So many pop videos. Old Britney, old Christina,” Tate said, “it's very campy I would say. Shawn absolutely devoured the choreo.”
