After being purchased by developers two years ago, the hammer has finally fallen on the childhood home of AC/DC founding members Malcolm and Angus Young, formerly located on Burleigh Street in Sydney, Australia’s Inner West.
The small, two-bedroom rental had been listed on the National Trust List Of Historic Homes in 2013, though when it was sold for $5.8 million in early 2023 the previous owner failed to mention the home's historical status, nor that the building had become a tourist attraction for fans.
Burwood Square Pty Ltd's general manager Leon Kmita said in a statement that the development company only heard out about the home’s musical history after being demolished.
“We regret that the previous long-term owner did not share this vital part of the property’s background with us,” he said. “Learning about this connection after our plans were already underway has shocked us. We are genuinely sorry for this oversight.”
Fans will be happy to know that his team was working to salvage whatever they could from the debris to create a “special space,” like a cafe or bar where fans could “gather to celebrate the band’s enduring legacy.”
“On behalf of the team at Burwood Square, I want to convey our heartfelt regret,” Kmita added. “We now recognise how deeply this location resonates with the AC/DC community and fans worldwide. We feel a strong responsibility to honour AC/DC’s legacy and to make amends to all the fans who hold this band in such high regard. While we cannot change the past, we are dedicated to celebrating this significant part of their story.”
He told fans, “Please know that we hear you, appreciate your deep admiration for this legendary band, and are devoted to making this right.”
