With the release of the IMDb TV docu-series, Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary releasing earlier this month, Luke Bryan has opened up his story of unimaginable loss to millions. While Bryan says he’s proud of the series and the way it has helped many through their own loss, he admits his family hasn’t been able to watch it in full.

“We haven’t spent a lot of time as a family watching it,” Luke told Audacy’s Coop. “My wife [Caroline] and I have watched parts of it — some of it is still very, very tough for her to watch — and if we sit the boys down, then me and Caroline start get emotional and all that, ya know.”

The series tells Luke’s story from his childhood in Georgia, to facing the tragic loss of multiple family members and overcoming grief to become a Country headliner. Luke lost his brother, Chris, in a 1996 car accident, his sister, Kelly, for unknown health reasons in 2007 and her widower, Lee, seven years later to a heart attack.

While the project has offered Luke’s young sons the opportunity to hear their uncle’s voice for the first time, Bryan says he has no intention on pushing the series on them, he wants them to discover it in their own time.

“I kinda want them to see it as maybe they want to see it,” he explained. “The main thing is as they come to me, it’s there, it’s living there. If they want to sit down and watch an episode or two, just to kind of learn a little bit more about their uncles and their aunts — we’re ready.”

He then provided some comic relief (in true Luke fashion) saying, “It’s hard to get them to sit down and watch the new Space Jam from tom to bottom, so….”

While Bryan and his immediate family haven’t felt ready to watch the entire series yet, his extended family has expressed nothing but love and gratitude for highlighting the lives of their loved ones.

“Right now, my friends and family and the older parts of my friends and my family, they’re really appreciating’ it,” shared Luke. “Been getting a lot of feedback from the fans too.”
