"You had to be there is a song that I wrote about the 'Sun Goes Down' tour with Kenny Chesney. As a lot of y'all know, he had me as an opener in the summer of 2024, and it was a life changing experience," Moroney explains. "I think it was a really pivotal point in my career, and y'all know I write about things that are very important to me and that tour is one of them."
"The first verse is a flashback to 2018," Megan reveals. "I bought Kenny Chesney tickets to go see him in Atlanta, Georgia in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. I had nosebleed seats. We were all in college just having a good time and seven years later, I'm on stage with him."
"I just wrote this song about being on tour with him and how grateful I am for the experience and how there was magic in the air, like you literally had to be there."
The song also served as a gift to her tourmate, as Megan gave Chesney the lyrics for Christmas. "Fortunately he liked the song, but I did preface it by saying, 'if you absolutely hate it, I just want to give this to you as a gift because I appreciate you so much for taking me on tour. You don't have to, we don't have to ever put this out. Nobody has to hear it.' But he ended up loving it. So now it exists and it's called 'You Had To Be There.'"
