Minnesota Golden Gophers wrestling sensation Gable Steveson is an Olympic gold medalist.

The 21-year-old Apple Valley, Minn., native defeated Geno Petriashvili of Georgia, 10-8, in the 125kg Gold Medal Match that started around 6:30 a.m. CT on Friday. Petriashvili had won the previous three world titles at 125kg.

Steveson trailed 8 to 7 as time was expiring, and was able to notch two points on a takedown to make the score 9 to 8 as time ticked down and the horn sounded. A video review solidified Steveson's gold medal win, making the final score 10-8.

Leading into the gold medal match, Steveson was spectacular defeating Aiaal Lazarev of Kyrgyzstan, 10-0, and Taha Akgul of Turkey, 8-0. He then defeated Lkhagvagerel Munkhtur of Mongolia 5-0 in the semifinals.

The gold medal match was the first time Steveson had surrendered points in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
