Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez End Bid to Buy Mets: Report

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez will not be buying the Mets.

The power couple are reportedly no longer interested in purchasing the team after negotiations with potential partners failed to materialize and the Wilpons refused to add SNY as part of a deal, according to Thornton McEnery of The New York Post.

A-Rod and J.Lo are the latest to step away from a pursuit to buy the Mets. Earlier this year, billionaire Steve Cohen had agreed to purchase the team from the Wilpons, but fell apart at the last minute, sending the Wilpons looking for a new buyer.

Rodriguez, who spent 12 seasons of his career in New York with the Yankees, had always said he grew up a Mets fan and nearly signed with the team when he was a free agent in 2001.

The former slugger and his pop star wife, who have an estimated combined net worth of around $750 million, reportedly partnered with Long Island biotech billionaire Wayne Rothbaum to try and secure a bid on the franchise, but the relationship with the businessman soured after Rothbaum wanted more control over the team than the couple were comfortable with giving him, per McEnery.

McEnery went on WFAN’s “Joe and Evan” recently and said that not only were A-Rod and J.Lo interested in buying the team from a business and baseball standpoint, but they looked at Citi Field as a potential concert venue that could rival Madison Square Garden in the summer.

The Mets are still attempting a sale of the team, but the coronavirus pandemic has suspended the 2020 MLB season and it could impact the valuation of the franchise. The owners may also face difficulty finding a buyer willing to take the team but not the TV network, a condition Cohen was willing to do.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, still has a post-baseball career in television, working as an announcer on Sunday Night Baseball for ESPN, as well as a studio analyst for FOX Sports.
