Mets fans boo Javier Baez in pinch hit appearance, cheer when he scores game-winning run

Mets fans clearly didn’t accept Javier Baez’s apology at first...but Javy went from goat to GOAT in the span of an hour in the Mets' walk-off 6-5 win over Miami in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Just hours after Baez apologized for his “thumbs down” gesture, which he initially said was his own way of booing back at the fans that have expressed their displeasure with New York’s second-half slide, the infielder was greeted with loud boos when he stepped in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth inning in Tuesday’s doubleheader opener.

Baez was called on to hit for Jeff McNeil with the Mets down 5-1, and was immediately hit with boos and “You suck” chants, with many of them continuing through his at-bat. Fans also mocked the thumbs down gesture as Baez stepped up to the plate.

Baez talked to reporters before the game and apologized for offending any fans for his gesture and subsequent explanation of it, and walked back those comments by saying the thumbs down was geared towards the dugout. Fans at Citi Field clearly didn’t buy it, as they even cheered after Baez was hit by a pitch in his pinch-hit appearance.

Baez got a second chance to apologize at the plate, however, and made the most of it by being in the middle of the Mets' final rally.

Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make it 5-3, and with two outs, Dom Smith singled and Pete Alonso doubled to bring Baez up once again as the winning run - and he promptly rapped an RBI single to left, making it 5-4.

Moments later, Baez indeed scored the winning run, rumbling all the way home from first on Michael Conforto's RBI single; left fielder Jorge Alfaro bobbled the ball a bit, allowing Baez to scamper home and slide in just ahead of the tag to complete the walk-off.
