Pete Alonso breaks the internet with 35-HR first round of Home Run Derby

I'll admit it: I kind of overlooked Pete Alonso in this Home Run Derby, probably because of all the (well-deserved) hype surrounding Shohei Ohtani and the fact that Joey Gallo has practically been playing like he's been in a Home Run Derby the past few weeks. Lesson learned. Don't overlook Pete Alonso in a Home Run Derby. Ever.

After taking home the crown in unforgettable fashion last time, he turned it up a notch... and then another notch, and then another notch, and then another. When it was all finished, Alonso had belted a whopping 35 home runs, the third most in Derby history behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (40) and Joc Pederson (39).

It was enough for Salvador Perez and his truly impressive display — 28 home runs was the second-best total of the night at that point and would have won any of the other matchups — to become a thing of the past. Most people were still wondering how the heck Alonso had blasted 35 legitimately jaw-dropping home runs to even pay full attention to the poor Royals backstop.

Alonso's performance didn't stop there, either, with an absolutely awesome post-round interview. Among his quotes:
— "I am the bar. I am the standard."
— On if he was locked in: "Oh yeah."
— "I'm just living in the moment right now."
And, most importantly, there was an homage to "The Office" in there as well.

The MLB Twitterverse was in awe of the absolutely amazing performance.
