Yankees announce a ninth positive COVID-19 case within team

The New York Yankees are not out of the weeds with their COVID outbreak.

Manager Aaron Boone announced on Sunday that another staff member tested positive for COVID-19.

The latest positive is the eighth member of the Yankees coaching and support staff and ninth member of the team. Boone did not specify who the latest member is, but said it was not a member of the “front-facing” coaching staff.

All nine positive cases on the team have been fully vaccinated and eight of the nine have been asymptomatic with one case of mild symptoms.

Gleyber Torres has been the only player to test positive, which has allowed the Yankees to continue to play their games despite the outbreak.

The Yankees had reached the 85% threshold after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in April, which allowed loosening guidelines for mask wearing among the team.

Since the outbreak, Boone and others in the dugout have returned to wearing masks or face coverings.
