USA Basketball remains hopeful that Pistons star Jerami Grant will be able to play in the Tokyo Olympics -- but his status is in question after he was placed in COVID-19 health and safety protocols on Thursday.

Bradley Beal entered the protocols on Wednesday night and was ruled out of the games Thursday by Team USA. Grant was placed in the protocols "out of an abundance of caution."

He has not tested positive for the virus, according to The Athletic.

Per ESPN, Grant's "status for Tokyo is yet to be determined, but there is hope he could clear the protocols in time to travel with the team next week."

Team USA, which is 1-2 in exhibitions, plays its first game of the Olympics July 25 against France.

Grant was originally selected for the team by head coach Greg Popovic, with backing from Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard, after James Harden opted out due to injury.
