Joel Embiid is firing back at Ben Simmons.

Following reports that Simmons does not want to return to the 76ers because Embiid’s style is not conducive to his, the Sixers’ big man was left puzzled and pointed out that the organization has gone out of its way to accommodate Simmons.

“I feel like our teams have always been built around his needs,” Embiid told reporters on Thursday. “It was kind of surprising to see. We’ll say that, even going back to, I mean, the reason we signed Al [Horford]. We got rid of Jimmy [Butler], which I still think it was a mistake, just to make sure [Simmons] needed the ball in his hands, and that’s the decision they made. Like I said, it is surprising.”

Simmons has continued to hold out of training camp as he tries to force the Sixers’ hand in a trade, which Embiid categorized as “borderline disrespectful.”

“I’m really focused on the guys that are here,” Embiid said. “The situation is disappointing, borderline kind of disrespectful to all the guys that are out here fighting for their lives. Some guys rely on the team being successful to stay in the league and make money somehow. Because if you’re on a winning team, you’re always going to have a spot in the league, just because you’re on a winning team and you contributed.”

Despite Embiid’s issues with Simmons’ absence and reports that he cannot play with him, Embiid still believes the Sixers are a better team with him.

“Obviously, we’re a better team with him, we’re not a better team without him, that’s for sure,” he said. “We are a better team with him. But like I said, it is surprising…We still hope he changes his mind, but I kind of owe it to these guys to worry about what we have here. That’s the fun of the job. To kind of figure out what’s going to happen, that’s not my job, I’m not the GM, I’m not an owner, so that’s none of my business, honestly.”
