John Wall wants trade out of Washington: reports

Wizards star John Wall wants a trade out of Washington, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and others.

"As Rockets/Wizards talks on Russell Westbrook-for-John Wall stall, Wall has made it clear he wants trade out of Washington to happen," Charania reported Friday evening, days removed from reporting trade talks between Washington and Houston.

Ava Wallace of The Washington Post followed up a short time later, confirming Wall — the first overall pick by the Wizards in 2010 — wants out of Washington.

Earlier this week, Charania broke the news that Houston and Washington were engaged in trade talks centered around Westbrook for Wall, although those talks appeared to be preliminary.

Chris Miller of NBC Sports Washington was able to confirm those talks did occur, characterizing Wall's involvement in them as a "perfect storm" of circumstances, namely that Wall and Westbrook have nearly identical contract structures. Miller also cited a Sept. incident — in which Wall was caught on camera throwing up gang signs at a party in New York City — as a driving factor in Washington wanting to move on from Wall.

"Although John has apologized for it, that incident kind of rubbed a lot of people within the organization the wrong way," Miller told The Sports Junkies.

With NBA free agency underway and the 2020-21 season set to begin on Dec. 22, the Rockets appear to be in no rush to move Westbrook or James Harden, both of whom have expressed their desires to be dealt. Houston's new front office leadership has no intention of being rushed into a deal that forces them to settle for less than the stars are worth.

Wall has missed the better part of the past two seasons recovering from an Achilles injury, but is primed to bounce back this coming season. Wall has not appeared in a game for the Wizards since Dec. 2018.
