In case you were unaware, there was a Division I football championship being played on Sunday and even though it was in May, it had the drama of a late December bowl game.
Sam Houston State completed its undefeated season, topping South Dakota State 23-21 in the FCS Championship game — and did so in style.
With 16 seconds remaining in the game and Sam Houston trailing by four points, Bearkats quarterback Eric Schmid dropped back on a third-and-goal from the 10-yard line and connected with wide receiver Ife Adeyi over the middle of the field and across the goal line to give Sam Houston the lead and eventual win.
It marked the first-ever FCS Championship in Sam Houston State history and the first FCS title for a member of the Southland conference since ULM in 1987. Coincidentally, this was Sam Houston’s final game as a member of the Southland conference.
