Clemson star Lawrence responds to NFL fans' calls to 'Tank for Trevor'

The NFL season is only three weeks old, but some fans are already looking beyond the 2020 campaign -- all the way to next April.

Several of the league's cellar dwellers are off to rough starts, and though it's still early and the postseason has been expanded for this year, it's safe to assume at least a few of them have no shot at contending for a playoff spot.

That could leave them in striking distance of the first overall pick in next year's draft -- and potentially a shot at drafting superstar Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

With each mounting loss, fans of the league's worst teams ramp up their calls on social media to "Tank for Trevor" -- that is, embrace the losing so as to assure the highest draft pick possible.

Lawrence himself has seen the chatter.

“I try to ignore it as much as possible,” Lawrence told the Greenville News.

“Obviously, if you’re on social media at all, you can’t help but see some of it," he said. "It’s just funny.”

For his part, Lawrence, perhaps the highest-rated college quarterback since Andrew Luck a decade ago, has already said this season will be his last in the college ranks.

Lawrence is off to a hot start for the No. 1-ranked Tigers, racking up 519 yards and four touchdowns through the air, while completing over 80% of his attempts. He's also scored three rushing touchdowns, underscoring his dual-threat potential.

The Georgia native, who turns 21 next month, took the college football world by storm two years when he led Clemson took a national title as a freshman. Last season his brilliance was eclipsed by that of LSU star Joe Burrow, the Heisman winner -- and eventual first overall pick in April's draft.

Lawrence was too young to qualify for the draft, however, precluding the Bengals from having to make a tough decision and dashing what would have been an all-time sports debate.

Clemson is 2-0 after trouncing Wake Forest and the Citadel, and next plays Virginia on Saturday.
