It was almost a year. It was nearly 365 long, sorrowful days — and then some — that would have separated Lions fans from their team's most recent win. It was nearly a pseudo-repeat of December 2007 to September 2009, when the Lions lost 19 consecutive regular season games.
But on December 5, 2021, one day before the year-long loop of losing closed, the Lions prevailed against the Vikings and shocked the NFL world with a victory. It was their first of the 2021 season, putting their record at 1-10-1, and their first since December 6 of 2020 when they defeated the Chicago Bears.
It wasn't an easy road to victory. Though Detroit led 20-6 at the half, the depleted Vikings marched back, coming within two points after scoring a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. They then picked off Jared Goff but had to punt back to Detroit with just over five minutes left of action before chaos ensued for the Lions on the subsequent drive.
Minnesota then marched down the field but boldly decided to score a touchdown while down two points instead of letting more time run off the clock and kicking a field goal. Needless to say, it was a decision they'd come to regret, as Goff and the offense marched back down the field and scored at the buzzer.
Reaction of all kinds — in-game, on the sideline and throughout the Twitterverse — flowed out of the majestic (and kind of humorous, if you ask me) victory, and we've compiled some of the best that we've come across. From a Dan Campbell reaction that fits the bill after his first career win to some great memes, here's what we can look back on after a victory for the ages.
Some others took the more sarcastic approach.
And if you're into shaming the Vikings for the loss... well, there's plenty of that to go around as well.
