Fantasy football: Week 13 waiver wire, streamers and starts

To quote Dunder Mifflin’s own Jim Halpert, “What is going on?!”

We knew the threat of COVID would pose scheduling challenges for the NFL. What we didn’t expect was Kendall Hinton, a practice-squad receiver for the Denver Broncos, to start at quarterback in a regular season game. In what would be an equally farfetched scenario under normal, non-pandemic circumstances, the Saints, a team currently quarterbacked by position-less novelty Taysom Hill, were installed as overwhelming 16-point road favorites in a game with a ludicrously low Vegas total (36).

This farce of a game featured, among other oddities, 91 combined passing yards with Hinton, who dabbled at quarterback in college, accounting for a single, 13-yard completion in the loss to New Orleans. We now inhabit a world where Bills receiver Cole Beasley finished with more passing yards (20) than the Broncos entire TEAM in Week 12.

Adaptability is a needed trait in the fantasy realm and that’s never been more apparent with COVID complications continuing to shape the league’s 2020 narrative. Lamar Jackson, James Conner, Mark Andrews, Jonathan Taylor, Drew Lock, Brandon Aiyuk and Adam Thielen all spent the week as spectators, requiring fantasy owners to adjust on the fly. With injuries mounting across the sport (Todd Gurley and Julio Jones were both absent from Sunday’s proceedings) and a pair of untimely byes to navigate (the Bucs and Panthers won’t be partaking in Week 13), the final week of the fantasy regular season promises to deliver another stiff dose of crazy.

Luckily my RADIO.COM colleagues Stephen Andress, Jordan Cohn and I are here to make sense of another hectic slate with thorny lineup choices, injury obstacles and COVID drama galore. Players of interest this week include Latavius Murray, who has quietly supplanted hobbled workhorse Alvin Kamara in New Orleans, diamond-in-the-rough Michael Pittman and talented Rams up-and-comer Cam Akers.

Good luck to all in your tireless pursuit of postseason glory. And to anyone who went against Tyreek Hill in Week 12 … drinks are on me.
