I'm sure this or similar jokes have been made before, but I can't stress enough the fact that Gus Johnson could announce quite literally anything and make it exciting. Dog shows, marble races, billiard tournaments, paint-by-numbers competitions (do those exist?)... throw Gus Johnson on a microphone, and viewers will be glued to the TV. That goes for everyone... except for the only person who doesn't like Gus Johnson's voice which, as it turns out, is Gus Johnson himself.
Sunday afternoon marked his return to NFL action and his debut alongside color commentator and former player Aqib Talib, and guests who tuned into the Vikings-Cardinals game — a high-scoring, fast-paced slugfest in itself — were treated to some absolute gems in the Gus Johnson broadcasting department. Here are some of the key highlights of the game, all of which happen to be accompanied by an ecstatic Johnson call. If you listen closely, you'll notice that his voice gets raspier and raspier with each call — likely due to the fact that he's screaming his head off with pure excitement the whole time, and even his vocal cords shows come effects of wear and tear.
I'm not sure Cardinals fans will ever want to watch another game without Johnson on the call. For NFL fans, it was a reminder of just how much enthusiasm he can bring to a broadcast, though anyone who tuned into some college football action on Saturday got to experience one of the better calls (and plays) we've watched in a while.
Needless to say, I was not alone in my assessment of Johnson and Talib's work in the booth together, with emphasis on the distinct style of the former.
