Why did Jay Cutler and wife Kristin Cavallari split? Turns out, the Laguna Beach and Very Cavallari star thought her husband lacked motivation and showed a concerning “lazy” streak after hanging up his cleats in 2018. According to Oil Coleman of the New York Post, Cavallari was hoping the former Bears and Broncos quarterback had more in mind for his post-NFL life than simply “hanging out” on the couple’s Tennessee farm.
Following his release from the Bears, Cutler appeared headed for the broadcast chair but reneged on his deal with Fox to join the Miami Dolphins, ending his career there after an injury-plagued 2017. Cutler, whose signature nonchalance (bordering on disinterest) earned him the nickname “Smokin’ Jay,” hasn’t done much since, showing little career ambition while apparently “mulling” broadcast opportunities presented by both ESPN and CBS.
Cutler may have lost his breadwinner status upon retirement, but he still has plenty in the bank after netting a cool $122 million over his 12-year NFL tenure. But the 37-year-old’s complacency and lack of drive clearly didn’t sit well with career-oriented Cavallari, who launched her own clothing brand, Uncommon James, in 2017.
The couple’s surprise announcement came shortly after spending nearly a month stranded in the Bahamas during the coronavirus quarantine. The two posted identical statements regarding their divorce on Instagram with some speculating Cutler may have simply copied and pasted Cavallari’s earlier remarks. Kristin and Jay’s seven-year marriage may be over, but we’ll always remember the subtle brilliance of Very Cavallari, a show that produced viral gems like this:
