Peyton Manning weighs in on the ‘Manning Cast’ curse

Peyton Manning knew it was coming. The elephant in the room. And, as any good journalist would, Ernie Johnson had to ask—what’s this Manning Cast curse all about?

A relatively new phenomenon, the Manning Cast is arguably too early in its brief but memorable existence to carry any kind of “curse.” But the sample size is growing by the week with Travis Kelce, Rob Gronkowski, Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford, Tom Brady and Josh Allen each suffering defeats the game after their appearance on the Manning Cast.

Obviously, this leaves the Manning brothers—who, it should be noted, both hail from the voodoo capital of the United States, New Orleans—with plenty of explaining to do. Twice, even three times could probably be passed off as a coincidence, but SIX prominent NFLers turning to dust, immediately after paying the Mannings a visit on Monday Night Football? That stinks to high heaven.

Clearly, something sinister must be at play. What evil are you hiding in that glorious man cave of yours, Peyton?

“I’m actually thinking about putting on whoever the Broncos or Colts play the following week to help my teams get a victory. That’s come into play a little bit,” joked Manning during his chat with Johnson and cohost Charles Barkley on the latest episode of The Steam Room podcast. “Hopefully the next player that we have on, if we have one on, wins the next game and we can kind of kill that.”

If there’s even a kernel of truth to this supposed curse, like the famous Sports Illustrated and Madden cover jinxes that came before it, shouldn’t the Manning siblings use their newfound powers for good? “You need to try and do one before Saturday and have Kirby Smart on there. That would be my advice,” quipped Barkley, well aware of top-ranked Georgia’s upcoming game this weekend against Peyton’s alma mater, Tennessee.

“That’s exactly what I should have done!” said Peyton, lamenting a missed opportunity. The Mannings spared their NFL brethren by taking last week off from their Monday night hosting duties, though now that their secret is out, it’s unclear who, if anyone, will be brave enough to join them on the next Manning Cast, whenever that may be.
