Jimmy Garoppolo was back under center for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, but it may have been short-lived.

Following a 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football, in which Garoppolo tossed two late interceptions and turned the ball over three times, head coach Kyle Shanahan would not make a firm commitment to the veteran quarterback for the team’s Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears.

“Well, that…I would guess so. You know, I’m gonna watch this tape and see if guys are healthy, first of all, and know where our guys are at,” Shanahan told reporters. “It was good for Jimmy to get healthy enough to play in this game tonight.”

Shanahan further indicated Trey Lance, who did not play on Sunday due to a knee injury, could get the nod if he is healthy enough.

“I got a whole team to worry about, I’m not just thinking about the quarterback situation right now,” he said. “I’m gonna evaluate everything, see where our team’s at, see who gives us the best chance to beat Chicago and see what our options are … We had two quarterbacks who were hurting this week. Jimmy was able to come back and play. We’ll see if Trey can next week. Still not sure yet.”

Lance had started for the 49ers in Week 5 when he filled in for an injured Garoppolo, completing 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards and an interception while rushing for 89 yards on 16 carries.

The first-round pick has shown flashes of his potential when rotated into series with Garoppolo, while Garoppolo has been a mixed bag.

Whoever Shanahan starts next week will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak the Niners are currently on, which Shanahan has shouldered most of the blame.

“I’m the head coach of this team,” he said. “I expect it and I deserve it.”
