The Brooklyn Nets announced the addition of Blake Griffin to their already star-studded roster. Griffin, who is 31, is averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game on the season. He hasn’t suited up since early February in anticipation of getting traded or bought out. The latter was agreed upon on Friday, which turned Blake into a free agent giving him the ability to sign with the Nets.
When it comes to betting, the Griffin signing has had an impact on Brooklyn's odds to win the title, depending on the book. One offshore sportsbook shortened the Nets to +260 to win it all, moving them ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers (+280) after the acquisition.
PointsBet Sportsbook, on the other hand, decided to hold tight with their numbers.
“The Nets are already the favorite, so there's not much room for them to come in any further,” Patrick Eichner, Director of Communications at PB, said. “Blake’s recent body of work doesn’t suggest an immediate move is necessary, but we’ll see how they go working him in during this early stretch.”
Thomas Gable of The Borgata Sportsbook in Atlantic City said they moved their odds 5 cents, from +290 to +285.
Moving to the Nets seems like a no-brainer for Griffin, especially if he is trying to win a title. The starting five is likely to be him running with James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Joe Harris, and Kevin Durant. Not bad.
It was not too long ago when he averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists during the 2018-19 NBA Season. While Griffin has lost some of his eye-popping athleticism due to injuries, he should still be able to provide Brooklyn with some quality minutes.
There is also a huge familiarity factor when it comes to the roster. Griffin is close to DeAndre Jordan, as they played eight years together on the Los Angeles “Lob City” Clippers. He is also friends with the team’s “Big Three” and worked out with them in Los Angeles last summer. Not to mention, the power forward has also played with Bruce Brown in Detroit.
Brooklyn’s roster is absolutely loaded, so anything other than a Finals appearance a failed season for this squad.
