The Match brought us Tiger and Phil. The sequel pit Peyton against Tom (ripped pants and all). So what will Turner have in store for its third installment? According to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi and Scott Soshnick, The Match 3: Champions for Change will be held November 27, the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), with past participants Phil Mickelson and Peyton Manning joining newcomers Stephen Curry and Charles Barkley.
Curry, a two-time league MVP and three-time world champion for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, is well-known for his golf acumen, competing in numerous pro-ams, charity tournaments and even the Ellie Mae Classic, a pro event on the Korn Ferry Tour, in 2017. Barkley, a Hall-of-Fame power forward who now makes his living as a hoops analyst on Inside the NBA, shares a similar passion for golf, though unlike Curry, he can’t play a lick. The 57-year-old’s famously broken swing has been a source of unintentional comedy for years. Of course, what Barkley lacks in skill, the popular TNT analyst more than makes up for with his humor and brutal honesty.
The Match 3 will reportedly be sponsored by Capital One with proceeds benefiting historically black colleges. With Curry’s help last year, Howard University in Washington D.C., one of the nation’s most recognized and celebrated HBCUs, was able to revive its dormant golf program, which the All-Star guard has agreed to fund through 2026.
Organizers are still determining the location, though wherever the event is held, it’s sure to attract plenty of television viewers. The Match: Champions for Charity this past May stands as the most-watched golf broadcast in cable history.
