"If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze," Trump said in a statement. "Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has."
Trump he went on to say the team should "replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again." He also singled out one of the team's star players.
"The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job," he added, taking a swipe at midfielder Megan Rapinoe.
Rapinoe, by the way, scored two of the team's four goals against Australia.
Trump previously criticized Rapinoe while he was in office in 2019. Rapinoe, an outspoken Trump critic, said she wouldn't go to the White House if the U.S. national soccer team won the Women's World Cup. Trump tweeted that she "should WIN first before she TALKS!" The team went on to win the 2019 World Cup over the Netherlands 2-0, with Rapinoe making one of the goals.
Trump made a similar comment about being "woke" during a rally in Arizona last month, where he also mentioned the team's surprising loss to Sweden in Olympic group play, ending their 44-match winning streak.
"Wokeism makes you lose, ruins your mind, and ruins you as a person. You become warped. You become demented. The U.S. women's soccer team is a very good example of what's going on," he said.
The team's bronze in Tokyo is the first time they've won a medal since the 2012 Olympics.
