HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Carlos Correa's single with the bases loaded in the bottom on the ninth finished the Astros 4-3 walk-off win over the Boston Red Sox Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.
The Astros loaded the bases in the inning against Matt Barnes, who allowed a double to Aledmys Diaz before walking Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley. Correa's single was his third of the game, and it improves the Astros 35-18 on the season.
Houston's ninth inning rally was necessary because the Red Sox rallied themselves in their half of the inning to extend the game. Boston loaded the bases after just three pitches from Roberto Osuna. Christian Vazquez singled through the left side to tie the game and put the go ahead run at third, but Osuna recovered by getting Steve Pearce to strikeout, Andrew Benintendi to pop out, and after Mookie Betts walked, Mitch Moreland grounded out to end the inning.
Osuna's first blow save of the season left Brad Peacock without a decision despite allowing four hits over six shutout innings with eight strikeouts. When he recorded what turned out to be his final out of the night, the game was scoreless, but the Astros finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth.
Brantley grounded out to begin the inning, but Correa walked and Yuli Gurriel singled. Josh Reddick's single into rightfield brought home Correa, while Tyler White followed with a bloop single into center that glanced off the glove of second baseman Michael Chavis, bringing home Gurriel. Boston got a run back in the seventh against Hector Rondon only to see the Astros add an insurance run in their half of the frame when Gurriel plated Diaz after ripping a ball off first baseman Mitch Moreland.
Gurriel, Reddick, White, and Diaz finished with two hits, while Bregman walked twice.
Rafael Devers had three hits for the Red Sox, who drop to 27-25 on the season.
The Astros will send Justin Verlander to the mound Sunday afternoon when they go for the series sweep against the Red Sox. He'll start opposite Eduardo Rodriguez.
